Feb 1, The Woman in Black Review: Breaking a Taboo of Horror

The Woman in Black movie posterThe gripes of many horror movie fans as of late boil down to a few keys, some of which include: PG-13 horror, overuse of CGI, and remakes/prequels/sequels. However, while The Woman in Black IS actually a remake of a 1989 TV movie (both based in and of themselves on a 1983 novel of the same name), it’s the way that it overcomes those other stereotypical problems that make it a standout. Instead of building its hauntings on a computer, the filmmakers mostly let the atmosphere build tension itself to great effect. In addition, blood and gore do spill sparingly, but this film still gets under the skin by breaking a key rule of PG-13 (and general) horror: children aren’t supposed to die.

7500 movie stillThe trailer for 7500 has the song "Leaving on a Jet Plane" is a song written by John Denver in 1966 playing in the background.  This song works brilliantly for this horror-thriller that will be a closed space film taking place on a Vista Pacific flight.  The flight attendant tells the passengers to turn off their electronic devices, a smart ass passenger declares that it is a urban legend and he won't be turning his off.  Unfortunately for this flight they are not alone and this flight is haunted.

7500 will land in theaters on August 31, 2012 from CBS Films.

Monsters in the Movies

I recently came across a terrific interview with John Landis on an episode of The Treatment. He was promoting Monsters in the Movies, his new book on the evolution of movie monsters. A lot of the stuff we assume comes straight from Old Country folklore is actually the clever invention of 20th century screenwriters. For example, sunlight wasn't harmful to vampires until Nosferatu came along. Maybe a hundred years from now, all movie vampires will sparkle... *shudder*

It's definitely something I'll be checking out when time permits...

Jan 30, (Video) ‘Twixt’ Gothic Vampish Poster and Trailer

Twixt Horror MovieTwixt tells the story of a burnt-out mystery writer (Val Kilmer) who gets mixed up in murder and evil in a California town.  Currently the film does not have distribution in the US but will be distributed by Pathe fror in France.  Many are calling Twixt a complete disaster when it first showed at TIFF.  It looks like Twixt will continue the string of bad films from the once great Francis Ford Coppola.

Francis Ford Coppola (Godfather, Apocalypse Now) directed and was the writer for Twixt that stars Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning, David Paymer, and Ben Chaplin.
