Jan 29, Stake Land Review: Another zombie apocalypse, but with vampires

Stake Land movie posterAll the usual assumptions about zombie apocalypse films are in this one. Zombies – oops, I mean ‘vampires’ – are everywhere. Small communities with limited exposure to the ‘vampire’ epidemic have managed to survive. The fabric of the country has been ripped apart and they are run by their own people with their own laws. Despair is everywhere, of which the teenage protagonist – Martin - continually reminds us with his running commentary. And, per usual, the ‘vampires’ become less important than the struggle between bands of humans..

Jan 29, Rose Red Review: Stephen King’s OTHER Haunted House Tale

Rose Red movie posterIn 1999, Stephen King and director Craig R. Baxley teamed up to create Storm of the Century, a great and underrated TV miniseries. King next tried to write an original haunted house screenplay (inspired by Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House) initially planned as a feature film (supposedly for Steven Spielberg). After delays due to rewrites and King’s infamous “hit and run” injuries, the script would evolve into the Rose Red TV miniseries and would again end up in Baxley’s hands. The story borrows some elements from other King tales, particularly The Shining and Carrie, yet still stands on its own through atmosphere and characters, proving the first Baxley-King collaboration was no fluke.

Jan 28, The Theatre Bizarre Review: Extreme Anthology

The Theatre Bizarre movie posterThe Theatre Bizarre Opens an Abandoned Theatre for One Night Only.

The Theatre Bizarre brings together seven cult directors for a night of bizarre tales. The end result is a film that blends the feel of the anthologies of the 70s and 80s with subject matter a bit more extreme.

2012 Nicholl Fellowships Competition

Well, it's that time again. The Nicholl folks are now accepting entries. It feels like my 2011 elimination e-mail was just yesterday. Come on, Scream. Positive thoughts... My werewolf spec had a good run in other screenwriting contests but never cracked the Nicholl Quarterfinals. After three attempts, I won't be submitting it this year.

I've fallen a little behind schedule with my intended submission,  a monster-free supernatural thriller. I'm currently somewhere in the middle of the second draft. No major plotting issues, just trying to smooth out the execution. I'd like to have the heavy lifting completed before the early deadline, then a month of tweaking before actually submitting in sometime in April. Speaking of deadlines, a couple changes from previous years:

Early deadline is now March 15th, regular is May 1st.
Entry fees have gone up: $35 (early), $52 (regular)

The payout has gone up from $30k to $35k

Also, first round scripts will be now be read by two different readers. I like this change. You're not longer at the mercy of a sole reader who just doesn't get your obvious brilliance — I mean, Grandma LOVED it!

Good luck!

A Fond Farewell

Hello my dear fiends! The last six years establishing and running Fatally Yours have been unforgettable. The site grew from a small, personal exploration of the horror genre to something far larger than I ever imagined! Along the way, I’ve met some very special people and experienced both awesome and awful horror. However, I’ve decided [...]

Jan 28, A Summer of Massacre Review: A Collection of Horror Scenarios Sharing a Common Effects Team

A Summer of Massacre movie posterA Summer of Massacre has claims of a record-breaking body count, but what else does it bring to the table?

Reportedly A Summer of Massacre has a Bona fide certificate from Guinness book of World Records as having the highest body count of any horror film. Hard to say if this is true, but they do have an official-looking document posted on their Facebook page. Let’s say it is an absolute fact that this film dwarfs the body count of, say, Braindead when the zombies are taken out with the lawn mower or Ghost Ship when the entire group of dancing passengers are sliced in half by a steel cable… so, now what?

Jan 28, A Serbian Film Review: Takes Depravity to New Heights

A Serbian Film movie posterA Serbian Film uses sex, and the fact that so many people are f-ed up about it somehow, as a form of torture and horror that’s difficult to forget.

This is a film about the making of a film – the last hoorah porn film for an aging porn star that had the unique talent of stamina and animalistic intensity in his performances. This particular porn star had been out of the business for a while now and lives with his beautiful wife and young son – but money worries allow him to be coaxed out of retirement by one of the porn directors he’d worked with in the past. The only condition for working on this last film, and collecting the huge paycheck for his participation, is that the star must know nothing of the script before hand. The whole thing is to be spontaneous and a complete surprise as it unfolds.

Jan 28, Below Zero Trailer and Images Will Warm You Up

Below ZeroCheck out the images from the indie horror movie Below Zero.  Looking at the images and trailer below helped me warm up from this cold Tennessee night.

The story is said to be "based on true events," but this is not what you are thinking.  The story being told is not a real story at all, while I guess it is technically.  Rather, the screenwriter put herself into the same situation the movie's protagonist finds himself in and wrote the movie.  So if you are really to stretch the meaning of real events that sounds more like a marketing ploy, or heck maybe it will turn out to be good film making.

The Wicker TreeThe Wicker Tree opens in theaters nationwide today, too bad it's not showing in Atlanta, maybe you will have more luck on having a theater near you.  We have listed all the theaters below.

The Wicker Tree is a follow-up to the original 1973 horror film The Wicker Man.   The Wicker Tree is based on Robin Hardy's novel Cowboys for Christ and is not a remake or a sequel to The Wicker Man.  The film will follow some of the same themes and concepts and should be considered more of a companion piece.
